
Ghost Town, Portage, Alaska
Portage, Alaska suffered a major earthquake in the early 60s which caused the very ground
beneath these houses to drop out from under them. The high tide line changed, bringing brine water in daily to
blight the vegetation. This image's stark contrasts display one of the more harsh realities of life in the tundra.
The images displayed on these pages cannot come close to capturing the subtle tonalities
and detail of the actual images.
